Droplet Computing was founded based on real-life customer feedback, where customers were looking at wanting to deploy any application on any device. Although there are vendors that used this “any app, any device” in their marketing verbiage, there were several caveats to the reality of achieving this. The main one being the need to be online so that the end user would need to connect to some form of VDI or cloud-based desktop and delivery mechanism to have their apps delivered. Droplet felt this was potentially overkill in terms of infrastructure requirements, and what if there was no connection available, or having that connection posed a security risk?
Not having a connection was the real-life scenario that was presented to Droplets founder during a potential 30,000 seat Chromebook roll-out project, that eventually was shelved after one of the customer’s key stake holders couldn’t get on to one of the core business apps. So, it was back to deploying expensive Windows laptops!
Droplet started with an idea to run applications and make them universal across all devices, without reliance on being connected. That materialized with an early prototype running on a Chromebook. However, Droplet soon realized that they needed to look at what is common across all devices, and that commonality is the browser. This resulted in the development of the Droplet Container, a secure, patent-pending container technology that allows you to containerize your applications and deliver them to multiple platforms giving you the choice of device.

Organizations are able to securely deploy legacy apps to modern platforms therefore reducing the amount of time required for patching and migration tasks. This approach enables migration of mission-critical apps to new operating systems and devices using Droplet Computing containers, which are unaffected by changes to the underlying device OS. Apps running in a Droplet Computing container are invisible to the host operating system so no longer present an attack surface. Your data can be secured in the container using enterprise-grade encryption and admins can set policy on where data is sycnchronized to when online – whether using a cloud-based storage platform, or a corporate file server.
Droplet Computing containers run locally on the endpoint device, whether that’s a Windows, Mac, or Linux device. This means there is no large-scale datacenter hardware overhead required, no complex VDI infrastructure required, and no bandwidth or latency limitations, all dramatically reducing the cost of hardware acquisition and management. All you need is a file share to store containers centrally, and a delivery engine to deliver them to the end users. The rest is all device-based. After all, the end user device of today is more than powerful enough, so why deploy two sets of hardware?
On top of this, Droplet Computing containers can run across platform devices, meaning you can run apps that were designed for the Windows operating system on other platforms, such as macOS or Linux. Even different device chipsets are supported meaning you can deliver applications without device limitations.
